Autism is one of the most challenging aspects of parenthood. There is no specific diagnostic test so often when nothing else fits children are labeled. I sometimes have felt that all of my children could have been labeled autistic at one time or another. There are no effective specific treatments and so there are many treatments that help some children. And so it is exciting when a simple, inexpensive, safe idea comes along that appears to be helping many children. Is it a "scientific" approach? I like the concept, "If it works it is scientific." Vitamin D seems to work for many children. Go to www.vitamindcouncil.org and sign up for the free newsletter. Read the recent newsletters of the success others are having with vitamin D in the treatment of autism. I would not wait until my doctor catches up with this information....that may take years. New ideas are slow to be accepted. A urologist was recently asked if it would make any difference in his mind if he knew that the idea that testosterone causes prostate cancer was based on the experience of just one patient. That is right, just one patient. He would not change his mind. That, to me, is frightening. Your health, and the health of your children, is too important to leave in the hands of your doctor. Get involved!
