One small ship cruise line goes under. Most people would have seen their ships as fodder for the scrap yard. Dan Blanchard of American Safari Cruises saw them as the means to start a new company. With the complete overhaul of two ships formerly of Glacier Bay, InnerSea Discoverieswas born, a small-ship cruise line with a taste for adventure and exploration of wild places. The first time I saw the Wilderness Discoverer she sat high and dry in a shipyard in Seattle. Poin... Read More

Dear Senator/Representative, On Sept. 2, 2010, the Oregon Medical Board suspended the medical license of Dr. John Gambee without having any patient complaints or demonstration of harm done to any patient. His medical license and his right to practice alternative medicine needs to be restored. In 1996, the Oregon Legislature enacted ORS 677.190.... Read More

PART 3 Why should consumers trust the tantalizing data on chocolate if they're all coming from industry-funded research? Thats a valid question, acknowledges nutrionalist John W. Erdman of the University of Illinois at UrbananChampaign who cochaired the AAAS symposium on chocolate. Though he believes people should be skeptical, he also points out that these studies would never get off the ground without candy-industry financing. Erdman likens the situation to Quaker Oats funding of researc... Read More
Test-tube studies by German scientists recently showed that chocolates tetramers were the top performers among this group in curbing the type of oxidation that free radicals can wreak in blood vessel walls. Thats potentially important, Schmitz notes, because such naturally occuring radicals can inflame vessels, a process that fosters a dangerous, rupturing of atherosclerotic plaque. Chocolates tetramers and larger procuanidins also help relax the inner surface of blood vessels, according to stud... Read More
